Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers is expected to be under consideration for the head coaching vacancy at North Carolina State University, ProFootballTalk and NBC Sports reported via ESPN. The job opened after NC State fired head coach Dave Doeren on Saturday, according to Yahoo College Football and Yahoo Sports. [2][3][4][7][8]

Rivers previously played college football for the NC State Wolfpack from 2000 to 2003, winning ACC Player of the Year. He was selected fourth overall in the 2004 NFL draft and played for the Chargers franchise from 2004 through 2019 before spending 2020 with the Indianapolis Colts. Rivers returned late last season to start three games for the Colts after starter Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles tendon, ProFootballTalk reported. [2][13]

ProFootballTalk and Yahoo NFL reported that Rivers interviewed for the head coaching job with the Buffalo Bills in January. In addition, CBS College Football and Bleacher Report noted that his son, Gunner, is a top football recruit who is committed to join NC State in the 2027 recruiting cycle. [1][2][6][9]

NC State is now searching for a replacement to lead its football program. Yahoo College Football listed candidate options including Scott Satterfield, Charles Huff, and Dan Mullen alongside Rivers. [3][6][7]
