The UEFA Champions League established a new scoring record during Tuesday's fixtures, BBC Sport and Yahoo Sports reported. Scoring totals reached new highs under the tournament's revised league-phase format, which UEFA expanded to create earlier matches between top-tier teams. [1][2]

In individual action on Tuesday night, Manchester City secured a 5-1 victory against AEK Athens, according to Yahoo Sports and Sky Sports. Phil Foden scored a hat-trick in the victory, moving him level with Frank Lampard in the rankings for top English goalscorers in Champions League history. [2][10]

Elsewhere in Tuesday's European fixtures, Liverpool defeated Villarreal by a score of 4-3, as reported by the Guardian and the BBC. Additionally, Yahoo Sports reported that Tuesday evening's late matches saw 33 goals scored across seven games. [4][8][9]

The tournament format previously expanded from a six-team event in 1955-56 to a 32-team knockout system in 1967, BBC Sport reported. UEFA introduced a single group stage in 1992 and reverted back to that structure in the 2003-04 season before launching the current league-phase format. [1]
