Stephen Fleming suggests England Test team should have an English coach

England national Test head coach Stephen Fleming has suggested that the England team should be led by someone from England. The BBC and Yahoo Sports both report that the New Zealander made the comments after taking on the role. [1][2]

Yahoo Sports reported that Fleming was appointed as the England Test head coach in July. According to BBC Sport, Fleming will take charge of his first series with the team in South Africa in December. Fleming succeeded his fellow New Zealander Brendon McCullum in the Test coaching position, while McCullum remains the white-ball coach. [1][2]

Fleming is the latest in a long line of overseas coaches to lead the England men's Test team. BBC Sport reported that only two Englishmen, Peter Moores twice and Chris Silverwood, have managed the Test side since 1999. Ashley Giles also had a spell as the white-ball coach during that period. [1]

BBC Sport noted that since 1999, non-English leaders of the national side have included two Zimbabweans, Duncan Fletcher and Andy Flower, alongside Australian Trevor Bayliss. [1]
