The Washington Post and Yahoo Sports both reported that head coach Eli Drinkwitz announced the update on October 8, 2026, stating that the 18-year-old player is currently recovering. [1][2][3]

The medical issue was first detected by Missouri sports medicine staff during standard freshman physical testing over the summer, according to CBS College Football and Yahoo Sports. CBS College Football reported that Jones had been hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, for treatment prior to the operation. [3][4][5][6]

Jones joined the University of Missouri football program as a highly regarded recruit from Florida. Yahoo College Football reported that he was rated as a four-star prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. [6][7]
