The Texas Longhorns sit at a 3-2 record in Southeastern Conference play with four conference games remaining, according to Sports Illustrated. The initial College Football Playoff selection committee rankings released on Tuesday placed the two-loss Longhorns at No. 7, Yahoo Sports Top reported. Texas Tech, Notre Dame, and UCLA were positioned behind two-loss SEC teams, with UCLA ranking No. 8, Yahoo College Football reported. [1][2][3][4]

Texas secured consecutive conference victories against Ole Miss and Mississippi State to remain in playoff contention, Sports Illustrated reported. A victory in all four remaining SEC contests would bring the Longhorns to a 7-2 finish in conference play. However, Sports Illustrated reported that winning out may not guarantee a spot without favourable results from the SEC tiebreaking procedures. [1]

The College Football Playoff selection committee favored SEC teams with two losses over competing programs, placing Alabama, Texas, and Ole Miss ahead of Notre Dame and Texas Tech, Yahoo College Football reported. Yahoo College Football also noted that the committee gave SEC teams higher positions than their standings in the US LBM Coaches Poll. The committee prioritized marquee victories over losses when determining the initial rankings, Yahoo College Football reported. [2][6][7]
