Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca confirmed that Gianluigi Donnarumma remains the club first choice goalkeeper following Carabao Cup penalty shootout success on Wednesday evening. BBC Sport and Yahoo Sports both reported that reserve goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli delivered a winning performance in the shootout, but Maresca stated there is absolutely no doubt about the starting position. [1][2][4]
Yahoo Sports reported that Maresca praised the contribution of Rulli while emphasizing that the goalkeeper understands his defined squad role. The performance generated discussion regarding the starting spot, but Maresca dismissed any debate over the selection hierarchy. [2]
Rulli spent the 2016-17 season with Manchester City without making a first team appearance before returning to the club, BBC Sport reported. In the 2021 Europa League final, he scored a penalty for Villarreal against Manchester United and saved a kick from David de Gea to win the trophy. [1][5]
Rulli plays internationally as a goalkeeper for the Argentina national team, while Donnarumma remains the primary option for Manchester City under Maresca tactical setup. [2][5]
