New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns stated on October 5 that contract extension negotiations with the team before the regular season begins do not look good. Yahoo Sports, CBS Sports, ESPN, DAZN, and The New York Times all reported that Towns expressed pessimism about reaching an agreement prior to opening night. [2][4][8][11][12]

Yahoo Sports reported that Towns is willing to accept a discount on a new deal, but characterized the offer from the Knicks as extreme. Yahoo Sports also reported a 77 million dollar gap in extension talks after brief discussions between the two parties, leaving the negotiations stalled. [3][5][7]

Towns expected a deal to be completed quickly following his postseason performance, according to CBS Sports. Towns expressed frustration with the progress of the discussions as the two sides remain far apart, Yahoo Sports reported. [4][6]

The Associated Press reported through Yahoo Sports that the reigning NBA champion Knicks face opening night against the Philadelphia 76ers, which includes their banner-raising celebration. Towns was originally selected first overall in the 2015 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. [2][13]
