Illinois sophomore forward David Mirkovic will not play on Saturday at Cincinnati in the team's first of three October exhibition games, Yahoo College Basketball reported. Mirkovic, who stands 6 feet 9 inches and weighs 250 pounds, is recovering from offseason surgery required after breaking his left foot. [1]

Illini head coach Brad Underwood stated that Mirkovic remains in a procedural buildup to return to play, according to Yahoo College Basketball. The recovery protocol leaves his exact return timeline uncertain beyond the missed game against Cincinnati. [1]

Mirkovic was recognized as one of two Big Ten Conference players named to the preseason All-America team, Yahoo College Basketball and roundtable.io reported. CBS Sports and CBS College Basketball separately announced their 2026-27 Preseason All-America teams, which feature 15 players across three squads ahead of the college basketball season opening on Nov. 1. [1][2][4][6]

Underwood is in his ninth year leading the Illinois men's basketball program at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois. The Fighting Illini compete as members of the Big Ten Conference. [1][7]
